Menace of Stock On Roads at Night

MOTORISTS EXPRESS CONCERN A complaint about the number of wandering stock on the roads at night was voiced at last everting’s meeting of the executive of the Automobile Association (Manawatu) by Mr. S. G. Rosvall. It was reported that a motorist had collided on Sunday night with a horse near Himatangi and was now in hospital, the horse being killed and the car almost wrecked. At Tiakitahuna the saino night another driver had struck a steer. These were not the only animals on the road that night, other cows and horses being seen. Mr. T. M. N. Rodgers stated that representatives had been made to have the law amended so that the fact that an animal was on the road would be prima facie evidence of negligence on the part of the stock owner. However, they had got nowhere. The president, Mr. W. H. Brown, said that on Sunday night last there were three separate sets of wandering stock on the Foxton highway and two accidents had resulted.

Mr. Rosvall: And on dead straight sections of the road, too. It was decided to bring the matter under the notice of the North Island Motor Union and the Manawatu County Council.
