Sir Howard d’Egville, organiser and secretary of the Empire Parliamentary Association, London, who is paying a short visit to the Dominion, arrived in Wellington yesterday from Auckland.

Cable advice has been received from the R.1.8.A. jury of awards, London, that the 1937 gold medal of the New Zealand Institute of Architects has been awarded to Mr. H. L. Massey, of Auckland, for his design of the Cintra Flats, Auckland.

The president of the Automobile Association (Manawatu), Mr. W. H. Brown, and secretary, Mr. S. I. McKenzie, were appointed last evening as the Manawatu delegates to the annual conference of the North Island Motor Union in Wellington in March. Mr. A. E. Guy, New Zealand/golf’s longest hitter, has been appointed professional to the Poverty Bay Golf Club. A leading professional for several years, Mr. Guy has been acting as an instructor for the New Zealand Golf Association for the past few seasons and is well known in the Manawatu.

Captain G. H. Heal, of the Royal Corps of Signallers, who has been attending a course of training in England, returned to New Zealand by the Awatea. Captain Heal, who was stationed at Yorkshire 'and Aldershot, will resume his duties at headquarters at Wellington.

Present at tho New Zealand Builders’ Federation conference at present being held in Palmerston North is Mr. Henry Meyer, of Wellington, who built All Saints’ Church, Palmerston North, an edifice which, has the distinction of being the first brick structure in New Zealand.

The death is announced by the Press Association of Mr. James Wrey Nolan, aged 83, the oldest surviving member of the Gisborne legal profession and a well-known racing administrator. He was formerly a representative cricketer and footballer, and a local body member.

Mr. A. P. Blair, president of the New Zealand University Students’ Association, arrived at Wellington yesterday from Auckland to take part in a deputation to meet the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, and the Minister of Education, Hon. P. Fraser, to discuss the question of openings in the public service for university graduates.

A motion of sympathy with tho relatives of the late Mr. Bernard Gallagher was passed at a meeting of the Wellington Rugby Union. In paying tribute to the services given by the late Mr. Gallagher to Rugby fotball, Mr. J. N. Millard (chairman) mentioned that “Bernie” Gallagher as a player had represented Wellington on 36 occasions from 1895 to 1902.

Mr H. F. Vaughan, who is at present manager of the Palmerston North branch of J. R. McKenzie, Ltd., has received notice of his transfer to Petone. Mr Vaughan will commence his duties as manager of the Petone branch at the end of February. Mr Lawson, late of Christchurch, will arrive in Palmerston North next week to succeed Mr. Vaughan as manager of the Palmerston North branch.

Paymaster Lieutenant-Commander G. H. Ashby has been appointed secretary to the Commodore commanding the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy, Rear-Admiral Hon. E. R. Drummond. He will relieve Paymaster-Lieutenant-Commander J. K. Highton. Lieutenant-Commander Ash-by, wlio has been in H.M.y. Exmouth, will leave for New Zealand with his wife and infant daughter by the Rungitane on March 3.
