Manawatu County Staff Picnic

From Our Own CorrespondentVlult to Totara Reserve. Members of the Council and staff of the Manawatu County Council held their annual picnic at the picturesque Totara Reserve on Saturday. Altogether a party of about 150' left Sanson early in the morning and had a pleasurable trip up the Pohangina Valley, the beautiful scenery being much admired. The party picnicked under the shade of the bush on the riverside. Late in the afternoon heavy rain set in which marred an otherwise very successful cay. Numerous races were held for all and several competitions added to the enjoyment, while bathing was one of the biggest attractions. Afternoon tea, ice-creams, fruit, etc., were again provided and community singing was greatly appreciated, Throughout the day the picnickers were kept in touch with events by means of a loud speaker equipment Owing to rain interrupting proceedings, the tug-of-war competition, which always arouses great enthusiasm, had to be abandoned. There is a coveted trophy for the winners of :his event, known as the “Bone of Contention.” At present it is held by the lorry a: id grader drivers. The chairman of the committee responsible for the arrangements, Mr A. K. Drew, expressed the pleasure of the committee for the good attendance and he hoped all had spent a very pleasant day. Mr Drew thanked tho Palmerston North Y.M.C.A for placing the grounds at the disposal of the committee and also expressed thanks to Mr Arthur Hop wood for the valuable assistance lie had rendered. The committee comprised Messrs A. K. Drew, H. V Bond, S. L. Hickford, and T. A. Adams. Messrs E. H. Butler and M. Sanson acted as starters and Messrs Jas. Boyce, A. K. Drew and I’.
