98 To-day
To-day the oldest inmate of Awapuni Home, Mrs. Ellen Eadie, will reach the great age of 98 years. Born in 1839, Mrs. Eadie left England and landed in Australia in 1863, and with her first husband, Mr. William Evans, settled in Queensland. She came to New Zealand in 1865, and one of tho unforgettable incidents in her life was when she saw a former Governor of New Zealand, Sir George Grey, arrive in Invercargill. The combined ages of Mrs. Eadie’s six surviving children total 394 years, and she has 23 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. It is interesting to note that Mrs. Eadie’s maternal grandfather lived to be a centenarian.
