Feilding Fire Board

QUARTERLY MEETING The quarterly meeting of the Feilding Fire Board was held yesterday, Mr. W. E. Carthew (chairman) presiding. There were also present Messrs. V. M. Edgar, L. A. Hutton, A. C. McCorkindale, E. Fair and C. H. Tate (secretary). The chairman welcomed Mr. Ilutton, tho newly-elected representative of the Underwriters’ Association, who replaces Mr. D. S. N. McCartney, a member of the board for the past four years. It was agreed to send a letter to Mr. McCartney expressing the board’s appreciation of his services. Correspondence was read in connection with the proposal to install a siren in place of the old fire bell. A Wellington firm quoted a 3 h.p. siren for £SO, stating that tho model was similar to that installed in many other towns in the Dominion. It was agreed to leave tho matter in the hands of the local executive to arrange for a trial and if satisfactory to purchase tho siren. At the request of the superintendent (Mr. O. C. Sporle) it was agreed to purchase a modern hand bucket pump for dealing with incipient outbreaks, at a cost of approximately £7. The superintendent reported that Fireman B. Thompson had resigned and was now living in Wanganui where he had joined the river city brigade. Mr. Thompson had served on the local brigade for seven and a-half years and it was agreed to forward him a letter of appreciation.

The report of the superintendent for tho quarter stated that four calls were received, three for chimney fires and one to the Lytton Street School. The insurances and value of the property involved at the school had not been obtained but the school committee had suffered a loss of £2l I7s of which property to the value of £2 7s had been covered by insurance. Plant and buildings were in good order and the strength of the brigade was two officers and 18 men. The attendance and work at all musters had been very satisfactory and at all tests a very good water pressure had been maintained. The station gauge registered an average of SOlbs during the day while the night readings registered 951bs. The report was adopted and at the close of the meeting members of the board inspected tho brigade station.
