Pedestrian Killed at Napier

NAPIER, May 4. ixnockea aown Dy a motor-cycle opposite the gate of his home at Port Ahuriri, Mr William Alexander Clark, aged about 70, died io the Napier Hospital at 7.45 last evening as the result of his injuries. The rider of the motor-cycle was also badly injured, but was reported this morning to be progressing satisfactorily. Shortly after 7 o’clock last evening Mr Clark left his house at Breakwater road and had stepped on to the road when the cycle, driven by * man named Hulford, of 2 McAuley street, Port Ahuriri, struck him. The impact thiew the rider of the cycle, and his brother, who was riding pillion, on to the road, tho former receiving head injuries. The brother escaped with burises and minor cuts. The ambulance was iiumediatley summoned and the injured men were removed to tho hospital, but Mr Clark died shortly after admission. The rider of the cycle is in a satisfactory condition. The late Mr Clark was a very wellknown business man of Napier, having purchased the book and stationary business of Mr J. Wilson Craig, some 25 years ago. This business, which was the largest of its kind in the town, was carried on under the name of Craig and Co. until the 1931 earthquake. Since the earthquake the business has been carried on in Hastings street by his daughter, Mis* Clark. Of a quiet, retiring disposition, the late Mr Clark was nevertheless held in high esteem for his strict integrity and his many other good qualities.
