In No Immediate Danger

Pope Insists on A Transacting Business

NEVERTHELESS ILLNESS IS SERIOUS United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Monday, 9.50 p.m. VATICAN CITY, Jan. 3. The Pope’s condition is described as stationary. Dr. Milani to-day said: “You can reassure the world that his Holiness's life is not in immediate danger.” The Pope for the last two nights has rested better. This morning he heard Mass, received eommunion and gave an audience to Cardinal Pacelli and the American Cardinal Dougherty who stayed half an hour. The latter said he was agreeably surprised at the Pope’s appearance which was not that of a sick man.

The Pope, against the advice of his secretaries, insisted on receiving othor visitors and transacting business after which Dr. Milani found that the depression characteristic of the illness .'ad returned but his ministrations enabled the Pope to pass a better afternoon. The prelates have now published a communique admitting the seriousness of the illness but Ihope for convalescence although it will be lengthy. Despite the Pope’s physical weakness his lucidity of mind and grasp of affairs are still unaffected. He works daily with Cardinal Pacelli.

King George’s message was communicated to the Pope and gave his Holiness the greatest pleasure.
