r ,om Our Own Correspondent Children's Christmas Cheer, Mr G. F. Smith (chairman) presided over a meeting of those interested in the children's Christinas cheer week. A report was submitted on a visit to Foxton by an official of tho Horowhenua Power Board in connection with the erection of coloured lights for Christmas week and, this being favourable, it was decided to obtain the lights and ilex forthwith and to arrange lor the installation without delay. Mr T. Chaffey reported that the euchro party held last Monday evening had proved to be a ilnancial and social success, so much so that permission was sought to run a similar function next Monday evening. The request was granted and gratification was expressed at the profit shown on tho lirst effort. A vote of thanks was accorded Mrs Moore for tho free use of her shop for the display of carnival trophies. The sub-committee set up to arrange for a swimming carnival reported that trophies had been proem ed and the programme of events decided upon was also submitted. The action of the sub-committee in altering the date of the swimming carnival to Saturday. December 1 2, was approved. Tho sub-committee set up to go into tho question of the purchase of toys for the children reported that satisfactory arrangements had been made for the purchase of all the committee's requirements. Tho secretary was instructed to submit a statement of the committee's finances to the next meeting to be held on Tuesday evening next and to notify subscribers that subscriptions were expected to be paid by that date. The secretary reported that considerable interest was being evinced in tho committee's efforts and that ho had received much encouragement during his canvass of the town. An old age pensioner, he said, had stopped him and asked him to accept 5s towards the fund. Water Supply at Manawatu Heads. The artesan bore recently sunk by Mr T. Richardson for the Foxton Beach Improvement Society has proved a very successful venture. The contractor struck a good supply at a depth of 140 feet, and although the society was prepared to go to 200 feet, Mr Richardson recommended that the bore oe tried out at the 140-foot level. Last week a hand pump was coupled up and it was found that water could be pumped at the rate of 10 gallons a minute. Tapped at ground level by a small hole, the bore flowed naturally at the rate of 90 gallons an hour. The Beach Improvement Committee will meet at an early date and discuss what steps will be taken in the matter of pumping and piping the water. Social Afternoon. Members of the local Methodist Church held a most enjoyable social afternoon on Thursday last for tho purpose of augmenting the church circuit funds. There was an excellent attendance of parishioners and friends, Mrs J. M. Thomson was the successful competitor in the ping pong competition, and the quoits competition was won by Mr M. E. Perreau. A vocal solo rendered by Miss H. Hinds, and elo- ' cutionary items by Mrs L. J. Chittenden were much appreciated. Several stalls which were conducted throughout the afternoon were well patronised. Afternoon tea was served by a willing band of guild members and the social and financial result of the effort were most gratli fying to those who were responsible for

A coronial inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of Stanley | Wilfred Wright, the young man whose ' body was found floating down the Manaj watu river near the beach on Wednesday ! morning last, was held before Mr J. K. I Hornblow, Coroner. After evidence had been tendered by Dr. John Bell McMllten, I Ernest Francis Crosbie, stationmaster, of Foxton, Douglas George Brlghouse, railway employee, of Foxton, Nessie May Crosbie, mother of the deceased, and Constable Owen, tho Coroner returned a verdict that deceased came to his death by drowning in the Manawatu river on or about. November 28, 1336, but there was no evidence to indicate whether by accident or otherwise.
