Awahou

From Our Own Correspondent Fine week-ends have been the exception rather than the rule for some time now. Last week rain fell continuously for four days and consequently shearing operations have had a further setback. Many farmers in the district will consider themselves lucky if they get their sheep shorn before Christmas, whereas in former years this was accomplished at the end of November. Hay is ready lor cutting on several farms and some exceptionally heavy crops of oats aro now shooting into ears, some of the plants being over six feet in height. Many clutches of pheasants aro to be seen in and around tho hay paddocks. Tho fine weather a month ago gave the chicks a good start in life. Saturday afternoon proving fine, a great number of motorists came up the valley. The previous week-end weather was very unpleasant and after Saturday's fine weather, Sunday of this week-end was a very boisterous day. Cricket and tennis enthusiasts have already commenced their respective games and when weather permits, plenty of practice is put into one or other of these popular pastimes. The contractors have now commenced the job of removing the church. The cliff face is getting dangerously close to the west side of the building as excavating work proceeds. As it is desired that the new position of the church shall be east and west, one corner of the building will be almost on the metal of the present road. Persnal. Mr and Mrs Lindsay Caldwell have now taken up residence in the Kairanga disirict. Miss Audrey Brown is holidaying at Paekakariki. Miss I. Montgomery left for Taihape last week after spending a few days in Awahou. Mrs W. Coombs and family left for Paekakariki at the week-end. Mr and Mrs A. Anderson, at one time residents of this district and lately of Kiwitea, will take up residence at Milson’s line, Kairanga, shortly. Mr W. T. Pratt, fat stock buyer for Messrs Sims, Cooper, who recently returned from a buying commission in Australia, gained some of his first New Zealand farming experience in this district. Mr Pratt owned and farmed a property hero before purchasing land in the Apiti district.
