From Our Own Correspondent. A meeting of the Ashhurst Public Domain and Cemetery Board was held last Saturday, those present being Mr W. N. Brewer (chairman), Messrs W. S. Maunder. M. .P. Wilkin, H. Bristow, and J. A. McDonell. The secretary reported that receipts for the quarter amounted to £6 10s, and the expenditure was £6 os. The caretaker reported that the pine trees planted during the winter were all making good growth. A set of new ropes had been fitted to the swings in the children’s area, and the blackberry pest attended to. The Manawatu river had. with the various floods during the year, caused a slight wash-out near the traffic bridge and it had been decided to plant willows whore necessary; also to lop tne existing trees near the wash-out to assist in preventing further erosion of the banks. A general inspection of the various areas was made by the board during the afternoon and it was decided to have the following work earned out tainting of gate, and pickets at bottom entrance to the domain; erection of six new seats in most suitable places Mon-, the walk through the bush; cut a footpath through to the river and also along the foot of the terrace; sign post to be placed in position for the domain visitors benefits. Many visitors to the domain are probably not aware that there Is an old Maori cemetery in the bottom domain. The totara. slabs which have marked the area having rotted away the board decided to have a cross erected marking the burial area. A few new seats are to be placed in the upper domain and a parkins area for cars is to be cleared near the shelter sheds. With the usual annual clean-up and the additions to be made, the domain 'should be In first-class order for the coming picnic season. The cemetery is to have a general clean-up and all weeds will receive a good spraying with sodium chlorate. Repairs and drainage at the caretaker's cottage are to receive attention. The receipts for the quarter amounted to £l2 13s, and the expenditure £4 14s. Three burials took place during the quarter and one plot reserved. Methodist Ladies’ Guild. The Methodist Ladies’ Guild held a social afternoon last Friday. Mrs Foston, the president, extended a hearty welcome to visitors and friends. Mrs A. Currie kindly made and presented each lady present with a small floral spray. A shoulder spray was presented to Mrs J. Williamson, the oldest member, who has just celebrated her 75th Dirlhday. Mrs Foston wished all present a very happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Items contributed during the _ afternoon were:—pianoforte solo. Miss K. Brewer: song. Mrs D. Maul; recitation. Miss Joan Barclay; duet, Mesdames Thomson and Curtis; recitation, Mrs W. Peck. Mrs Maul won the afternoon’s competition. The proceeds of the bring and buy stall amounted to £3 2s, wnlch will assist the circuit fund. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. The guild has gone into recess until March, 1937. Personal and General. Mr and Mrs Les. Harris have left to take up their residence in the Marton district. Mrs W. Drummond, her friends will be pleased to hear, is now home from hospital, where she has been an inmate for several weeks. The weather during November has been very unseasonable. The rain continually held up shearing operations, and many sheds will probably be shearing well up to Christmas.
