Finals of Croquet Tournament

WILL BE PLAYED TO-DAY. Although , fine weather prevailed yesterday for the annual tourney of the Manawatu Croquet, Association now nearing the closing stages, a strong wind made Condition's a little difficult. Practically all events have rcachod tho finals and. the tournament will finish to-day. Notes on the Play.

One of tho most exciting games of the day was the final of tho champion doubles' in which four good players were engaged, Mesdames T. Simpson and Wood prevailing in a long drawnout finish against Mesdames Bryan and McMurray when all four clips were on tho peg. In tho early stages all four players started cautiously, Mrs. Simpson eventually hitting out to make a break of seven from the third hoop. In and out play followed, Mrs. Bryan making a break of five, Mrs. Wood going from two back to tho last hoop. With three clips on the stick Mrs. McMurray wired herself in position for tho last hoop after separating the opponent, balls. Mrs. Simpson made for black but missod. Mrs. McMurray made her hoop, picked up black and again separated the opponent bails. Mrs. Wood lay up to the partner ball, Mrs. Bryan separating tho balls, but put herself out. Mrs. "Simpson lay a perfect rush and,then : pegged out. : ' In tho final of tho 0 championship Mrs. McCarty oarly established a lead, but when she had both clips on the stick Mrs. Christmas made a good reoovery and caught up and at one stage it looked as if she had the game in hor hamls. .In making for the stick Mrs. McCarty struck a hoop but eventually retrieved tho position to finish tho game. In tho semi-final of the open championship (second life) Mrs. Petrie turned the tables on Mrs. Wood, beating her in a closely-fought game, 26 —21. The pair went neck and neck, neither player giving anything away £o the other.

Airs. Morgan, who has been playing consistently,won out to the final of the open championship by beating Mrs. Petrie in the final of the second life, the latter being definitely off her fong shots. However, at one stage Mrs. Petrie made a break of six and seemed to be recovering lost ground only to fade out again, Mrs. Morgan winning 26—21, Open Championship. First Life. Semi-final: Mrs. Petrie beat Mrs. Colquhoun, 26—16. Second Life-Semi-final: Mrs. Petrie beat Mrs. Wood, 26—21. B Grade Championship. Semi-final: Mrs. Aloxon beat Mrs. Gould, 23—8. Final (best of three) unfinished: Mrs. Moxon beat Mrs. Oliver, 26—19; Mrs. Oliver beat Airs. Moxon, 26—17, C Grade Championship. Final: Mrs. AicCarty beat Mrs. Christmas, 26 —24. Championship Doubles. Final: Alesdames T. Simpson and Wood beat Mesdames Bryan and MeMurray, 26—24. Handicap Doubles. Semi-final: Mrs. Colquhoun (4J) and Miss McFarlane (8$) beat Mesdames Bryan (scr.) and AlcMurray, 26—21; Alesdames Simpson (1) and Lee (6) beat Airs. Anderson (6) and Miss <flewman (64), 26—7. C Grade Handicap. Semi-final: Mrs. Permain (104) beat Mrs. Christmas (94), 26—22. Finals To-aay. Open championship: Mrs. Morgan v. winner of Airs. McMurray-Mrs. Petrie game. B handicap: Mrs. Moxon v. Miss Read. Handicap doubles: Mesdames Simpson and Lee v. Mrs. Colquhoun and Aliss McFarlane. Two other finals unfinished last evening were pegged out.
