Women's Institute

COLYTON The December meeting was held in the hall on Tuesday. Owing to the inclemency of the weather there was a smaller attendance than usually recorded, Mrs Beatson presiding. Votes of sympathy were passed to Mrs J. Crook and Mrs W. Bussell, two members who had suffered bereavements since last meeting. The Feilding Horticultural Society wrote congratulating the Institute on winning the Institute competition at its recent show, this being the third successive year in which the Colyton Institute has been successful. It was decided to enter an exhibit of 12 assorted articles in the forthcoming Feilding show in February. Mrs Sporle gave a talk on the bush picnic held on Mr Bussell’s property and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr and Mrs Bussell for their kindness to members.

The January and February meetings of the Institute will be held on the secon Tuesday in each month instead of the first. The January meeting will take the form of the annual picnic, to be held on Mr J. Shorthall’s property, Spur road west. A general invitation is extended to all residents and families to attend. Miss Pearce gave a short talk on her visit to the children’s health camp at Otaki and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The Christmas stall was in charge of Miss Wales, while an attractive display of Christmas presents costing not more than 1/6 formed the competition, and resulted: Aliss Pearce 1, Mrs Weston 2, Mrs Sporle 3. The demonstration on framing pictures was only partly completed, the afternoon passing all too quickly. Afternoon tea made a pleasant break, Mesdames J. Crook, F. Hills and Miss Hills acting as hostesses.
