Technical School Cadets

COMPETITIONS FINALISED

On Thursday afternoon the cadet company attached to tho Palmerston North Technical School engaged in their annual inter-platoon competition for the Cunninghame Shield. Points were awarded for inspection, physical drill, rifle exercises, squad drill and tabloid athletics.

No. 1 platoon (Arawa), by showing tho best all-round proficiency, was successful in annexing the shield. They gained first place in the tabloid athletics, and second place in rifle exercises, squad drill and physical drill. The premier positions in tbe various competitions wero very evenly divided, No. 2 platoon winning the physical drill, No. 3 the rifle exercises, and No. 4 the squad drill. Numbers 3 and 4 platoons shared the honours in the inspection. The final positions were: No. 1 platoon (Arawa), under Sergeant I. Gordon, 14+ points .... 1 No. 4 platoon (Ngapuhi), 13 points 2 No. 2 platoon (Rangitane), Hi pts. 3 No. 3 platoon (Tainui), 11 points .. 4

Tainui were the previous holders of the shield.

On Friday morning last the cadet company fired at tho Hokowhitu range for the McNab Shield awarded the best shot in the company. The leading scores were as follow, the figures being for .22 and .303 rifles, in that order:—Cadet W. dH. Cleaver, 84, 71—155; Cadet A. Algie, 82, 64 —146; Sergeant W. Young, 87, 58—145; Cadet M. Olsen, 85, 60— 145; Cadet K. Hardie, 85, 59—144. Tho competition for tho best senior shot (.22 rifle) was won by Sergeant W. Young 87, Cadet W. H. Cleaver being runner-up with 84. For the junior competition (.22 rifle) Cadet I. Nesbit won with 86, Cadets M. Olsen, Schaw, K. Hardie and D. Patton each being 85.

A competition was also carried out to select the best N.C.0., the winner proving to be C.S.M. W. Poole with 26 points, the next highest being Sergeant J. Warner 21, Sergeant W. Young 20+ and Sergeant I. Gordon 15J.

The winners of the last three competitions will be awarded the polished shell cases presented by the Defende Department.
