Jack Lovolock failed in probably Ms last assault on the world Mile" record to-day, for Archie San Romani, a young Kansas college student, won the event handily five yards ahead of the great New Zealand runner and fifteen yards in front of Cunningham. Lovelock was in the lead at the half distance and appeared to bo a sure winner, but suddenly Romani spurted and gained a yard lead. Near the finish Lovelock made an attempt at his famous final sprint, but Romani’s sprint was stronger and ho gained four yards in the last 200. Romani’s time was four minutes nine seconds.
