Rail-car Service Inaugurated Yesterday

Three-penny rides to Terrace End in the new rail-car were popular last evening when the Mahuhu inaugurated the evening service between Palmerston North and Woodville. On its arrival shortly after 8 p.m. from Wellington via the Wairarapa, the Mahuhu was greeted by a fairly largo crowd of in terested spectators at the railway station, all eager to see what the car was like, both inside and out. Brilliantly lighted within, its comfortable appointments could be seen to advantage through the windows and so eager were some to test its riding qualities that a trip to Terrace End could not bo resisted. It was a very satisfactory run, the passengers expressing themselves as being delighted with the trip and impressed with the comfort, speed and cleanliness of this new form of railway travel.

The Mahuhu was scheduled to leave Woodvillo at 8.5 a.iu., but having to wait to pick up passengers from tho train from Palmerston North, the departure was delayed four minutes. Most of tho car was reserved, aud passengers wero picked up and set down at various parts of the journey. The Mahuhu arrived in Wellington with 42 passengers. Among the passengers were commercial travellers from Palmerston North who had business in the Wairarapa, people who wero going to Wellington for a day’s business, and o-'e or two. who made tho trip for tho novelty of it. Tho Mahuhu took 15 minutes to climb the Rimutaka incline, from Cross Creek to the summit. The Maahunui left Mastertou for Wellington at 7.50 a.m. and brought 50 passengers. The car was til minutes late, 15 minutes of tho delay being caused by some flooding ou a stretch of the line between Petone and Ngahauranga. The Mahuhu made the return journey in the afternoon, ’this time right through to Palmerston North, going back to Woodville at 8.47 p.iu. to be ready to repeat the performance to-day and every day. The night service to Woodvillo should bo very convenient for Woodvillo residents who desire to shop in Palmorston North, especially on the late night.
