A Copley Picture Exhibited in London
FOUND IN TOULON “FLEA AIARKET”
On exhibition at the Tate Gallery is a recently discovered painting by John Singleton Copley (1737-1815), Americanborn member of tho Loyal A?ademy. The picture is that of a little girl playing with a dog. Credit for tho discovery belongs to Francis J. AlcEwen, artist, who has lent the picture to the gallery. The picture, measuring 35m. by 2/it:., was found in a very dirty coalition in the Alarcho aux Puces —“flea market”—of Toulon. The picture, which is of circumstantial rather than great artistic interest, came to the Tuulun market lroiu a »ab at Baudot after the death of Alme. Herne, to whom it had been Jolt by a Aliss Stanley Hunter, a dancer, of American origin, of Paris. from its striking resemblance to a '■giro in a portrait ;'u„p by Copley of !rrui It and his t’ain.y, the 'aiut 'ig is believed to represent ono of his laughters.
