Collector Finds Rare Stamp
RELIC or AMERICAN CIVIL WAR.
l’er Press Association. WELLINGTON, Last Night. A copy of an excessively rare Livingston, Alabama, “postmaster” stamp, valued at from £450, has been found iu Wellington. The owner is Mr G. E. Harrison, a. stamp dealer of the city, who intends to send it to the United states for sale. The stamp is crudely produced and is unperforated. It is palo blue on whito wove pilpcrand ivas issued in JSGI by the postmaster at Livingston when Alabama was among tho .States that seceded from the United States. They were sold-at live cents each, but to-day probably not more than half a dozen exist. Mr Harrison bought the stamp iu an old general collection about fifteen years ago. Tho collection had no outstanding features and after the stamps, for which there was an immediate market and which Mr Harrison needed for his stock books, had been extracted, it was put away with others and only brought to light a few days ago when he came to go through this little lot of stamps. The stamp is unattractive in features and has a pen-marked face. Many of the Confederate States ’'post offices had no postmarks and stamps were customarily cancelled with a pen.
