Serious Flooding In South of England
HEAVIEST RAINSTORM TOR 20 YEARS.
(British Official Wireless). Received Wednesday, 0.50 p.m. RUGBY, Aug. 11. Serious flooding occurred in southwest London and parts of Surrey early last night as the result of torrential rain during a. severe thunderstorm. Over 2i inches of rain were registered in less than an hour at Leatherhcad. It was the heaviest rainstorm there for 20 years. Only one house was struck by lightning and the damage was slight. A fall of chalk caused by the rain in a railway cutting between Goulsdon South and Merstham held up local trains from London and it became necessary to divert the trains while the damage was repaired.
