From Our Own Correspondent Rifle Clubs’ Teams Match. On Saturday last tho Ashhurst Defence Rifle Ciub was at home to members of the Aokautere Miniature Club. Owing to the unsettled nature of the weather or.ly four of the visitors attended and a match of four a-slde was fired over the 300 yards and 500 yards, the conditions being fairly rough and boisterous. Good individual totals wero returned, Roy Romley with 33 heading the 300 yards, and J. Searle 34 at 500 yards. Grand totals were J. Searle 66 and C. Turner and A. Brill 65 each. Ashhurst A scored 254 in the teams match, Ashhurst B 244, Aokautere 234, Ashhurst C 221. The Ashhurst team is to visit Aokautere at an early date to complete the match to be on tho miniature range. Cars will leave his residence at J. 1.45 a.m. sharp, weather conditions permitting. , Scnool Committee. The monthly meeting of the Ashhurst School Committee was • held last week, Mr. M. P. Wilkin presiding and others present being Messrs. O. Kerrigan, E. Tunnicliffe, R. Davis (secretary) and the headmaster, Mr. R. N. Finlay. An apology was received from Mr. W. Drummond. The headmaster reported 122 on the roll with several new pupils anticipated. There are 53 on the dental clinic roll. During tho month Arbor Day was celebrated when the Headmaster gave a lecture in the morning. Shrubs were planted by teachers and pupils during the afternoon. The shrubs were a donation from Messrs. Harrison who were accorded a vote of thanks and appreciation by the committee for their generous donation. During the month, a contractor had treated the school floors with a special saniary preparation, the headmaster expressing the results as very satisfactory Thanks were accorded those who provided transport to Whakarongo for the football and basketball teams, and also to the ladies who assisted with refreshments during the Whakarongo children’s visit to Ashhurst. School Ball. Tho children and parents are eagerly looking forward to the end of the term when the annual plain and fancy dress ball sot down for August 21, is to be held. Tho teachers are busy training the children for tho various dances and, given a fine night, ail should have an enjoyable time, the children especially as all are sure to try and disguise themselves in masks and costumes so that their playmates will have difficulty In recognising them. Rifle Club Dance. Last Friday evening the Ashhurst Defence Rille Club held its second annual dance and presentation of trophies. The hall with its decoration of coloured paper streamers, and the additional small replicas of targets used on the range, created quite a bright effect. The stage was decorated with crossed rifles, greenery and pampas grass, wlilcn together with the display of trophies won by the various members during the season, looked exceedingly well, tfle silverware adding brightness to an already gay effect. If anything was needed to improve the evening, it was found in the many and varied gay frocks of the ladies. Among the trophies was to bo seen tho Parkes and Co. Cup which had been presented for competitions between the Pohangina Valley Club and Ashhurst. Last year the Pohangina team was successful in winning the cup and also all other premier team trophies of the district. This time,, however, Ashhurst turned the tables, in the Parkes and Co. Cup and will hold same for 12 months. The club’s president, Mr. W. G. Romley, had associated with him Mr. R. W. H. Ramsay (president of tho Manawatu-Pohangina Rille Association), Mr. 11. Barlow (secretary Linton Defenco Rifle Club), Mr. D. Speiman (Pohangina Valley Club), Mr. W. R. Kells (veteran of the Volunteer Corps and vicepresident of the Ashhurst Club) and Mr. R. A. Jones (secretary of the Ashhurst Club). Prior to presenting the trophies he expressed the club’s and association’s thanks to the patron of the club, Mr. A. W. Akers, for allowing the riflemen the use of tlie range property gratis and tor his interest in rifle shooting. In eulogising the services of the club secretary, Air. Romley expressed thanks and appreciation for his organising ability, and his indefatigable efforts on behalf of the club. Romley), congratulated the Ashhurst team on their fine effort and commented that his club was looking forward to next season’s matches when keen competition would again ensue. Air. IV. R. Kells, vice-president of the Ashhurst Club, on behalf of all riflemen in the district, conveyed thanks and appreciation toiMr. Romley for keen interest and services to rifle shooting generally and as president of the Ashhurst Club all were sure of a warm welcome and courtesy on or off the range. Air. Kells, in presenting him with the Hausmann Cup which lie had won, said that next year one of the premier trophies would find Air. Romley a hot contender. For the function visitors were present from W’oodville, Fciiding, Palmerston North, Raumai, Aokautere, Whakarongo and locai districts. The programme was of both modern and old-time dances. The floor which was in great order, was crowded throughout the evening. Novelty dances were won as follow; Monte Carlo. Aliss Edith Hoskings and Air. C. Jones; lucky target dance, Aliss J. Wilkins and Air. H. Prennan. The supper department was in the capable hands of Riflemen W. N. Brewer and I. Paton with the assistance of riheu.en of tho club as waiters and pantry lane’s. Great credit must go to the ladies’ committee which each year meets to dee irate the had and prepare the supper, which is a decided asset towards the evening’s success.
