Paul Robeson Makes “Show Boat” a Masterpiece

MAGNETIC SINGING A FEATURE OF COLOURFUL FILM (Regent: Coming Soon.) While Paul Robeson sings the immortal song “OP Man River” in his latest picture, “Show Boat,” scenes in which he himself is featured illustrate the sentiments of the song. As the various phrases are sung, scenes are introduced to give colour to the song. In one of these Robeson staggers under the weight of a huge cotton balo slung across his broad back and held in position by two stevedoring hooks. This gives us another glimpse of the magnificent physique of this actor, who was last seen to great advantage iu “Sanders of the River.” Strong voice and muscular body do not always go together, but iu tho case of Paul Robeson they blend perfectly. In fact, ho is a most fascinating creature from every aspect. Scholar, jathlete, singer, actor, ho is a mail t\ho could hardly avoid being tho unique celebrity he is. Ho and his wife are the idols of the social world of London, and they move among tho most distinguished classes, admired and respected by all. Be fire his glorious bass-baritone was recognised, Eotiesou was a student for the Bar, and his academic career was a most successful one from the scholastic as well as the sporting side. Culturally, in fact he is far ahead of the average man and can talk fluently on almost any subject. Chief among the stars of “Show Boat,” are Irene Dunne, Charles Winninger, Paul Robeson, Allan Jones, Helen Westley, and Helen Morgan. There are several other figures iu the cast of tho film who appeared in the original stage show and the result is that a wealth of Ziegfeld talent has been brought to the screen in a modern manned. Tho music is the great feature of the show, aud three new songs have been produced for this picture, “1 Have the Room Above Her,” “Gallivantin’ Around,” ‘‘Ah Still Suits Me.” Irene Dunne’s performance iu this picture seems to transcend anything sho has done before, and Allan Jones, who sings with her in three ducts, has a very line voice. But one of the outstanding attractions of this show is the singing and acting of tho inter-nationally-fumed Paul Robeson. Charles Winningor almost steals tho show in several places. Helen Westley, veteran of stage and screen, puts over a great performance as Andy’s spouse and keeps His spirits under stern control. Helen Morgan, radio star and well known cabaret singer, gives a fine portrayal of Julie, her original rolo of tho Ziegfeld show. Negro choruses and hundreds of supporting players complete the personnel of one of tho greatest musical films from Hollywood.
