From Our Own Correspondent Chamber of Commerce, A meeting of the Shannon Cnamber of Commerce was held last week, there being present Messrs. A. Hyde, T. C. Thwuites (secretary), E. Perry, J. A. Wilkinson, S. Uraha, C. Grey, J. Gardner, E. Thomas and R. Quinlan. An apology was received from Mr. J. Roach. The main object of the meeting was to urgo tiio Minister of Employment-to proceed with works in tho viciniiy of Shannon m order to absorb the local unemployed. Works mentioned were the Buciuey-Koputaroa road and the Makerua deviation, hull Information is to be sought regarding the Government housing scheme, ju was decided to write to tho Minister of Inousiries and Commerce urging that the Government legislate lor a universal half-holiday, prererenee being given to Saturday, it was left in. the hands of Messrs. Hyde and Graham to enquire Into the position as regards ax planting in the district; also the prospects as regards the nax industry in the luture. Presentation to Institute Member. At a meeting of the committee of the Women’s Institute a presentation of a pair of slippers was made lo Miss Brady, who is leaving Shannon. Mrs. C. Easton, in making the presentation, thanked Miss Brady for all she had done for ’ the Institute. She had served on the committee, been a regular attender, and had always been willing to help the Institute in any possible way. They were very sorry that Miss Brady was leaving the district and hoped that whenever possible she would come to their meetings. Miss Brady suitably responded. Accident. A painful accident beiell little Coral Andrew, daughter of Mr. and .Mrs. R. Andrew, of Vance street, when she was returning home from the Dairy Company’s store. She had stepped aside when a motor lorry approached her, but a motor car following immediately behind knocked her down, causing cuts on the head and legs necessitating several stitches. She was attended by the district nurse and afterwards removed to the Palmerston North Hospital. A later report stated that she was pogressing satisfactorily. Farewell Party. Members of the choir, social committee and vestry of the Anglican Church and friends, held a social evening in the Parish Hall for tho purpose of saying goodbye to Miss Brady. Under tho guidance of Mr. J. Bovis, who was as usual the life of tho party, all were kept busy moving round in games and dancing. Songs wore sung by Mr. Lind, Mrs. Lind accompanying him on the piano. Deidre Leng-Ward recited. Following supper, Mrs. H. Easton presented tho guest of honour with a bouquet, and Rev. E. VV. Burgin on behalf of tho vestry, social committee and choir, asked Miss Brady lo accept a brown leather handbag with their very best wishes for her future happiness. .She had been a valued member of tho choir and social committee, during her stay in Shannon and had always carried out her duties faithfully and willingly and had been a regular attendant at church. Mrs. C. Easton also spoke a few words. In replying, Miss Brady thanked them for the present and said how happy she had been in Shannon and how grateful she was for the friendships and many kindnesses that nau come her way. She felt that she was not severing her connections with the town altogether as she would still be able to return on a visit. Social Afternoon. On Wednesday afternoon at the Presbyterian Church a successful social afternoon was held by the members of the guild. There was a fair attendance of church members and very good business was done at the stall on which were vegetables, cakes, jams, knitted articles, etc. Mesdamcs J. Aim and S. Graham were in charge of the stall. Afternoon tea was served and two competitions were held, the winners being Mrs. Faulkner and Mrs. John Murray. School Committee. A meeting of the Shannon School committee was held on Monday, there being present Messrs. L. H. Best (chairman), .1. Roach, J. Bovis, B. Brann, Roberts, Campbell (secretary) and 1. F. McDonald (headmaster). The headmaster reported that being short of firewood, he had requested the secretary to procure a supply, which was done. Mr. Roberts reported that at a recent meeting of the calf club committee a suggestion had been made that tho money received as a donation be used to purchase a trophy for tho best calf exhibited by a Shannon School child. It was resolved to leave the finalising of the trophy to a later meeting. Personal. Mr. Bowling, late of Ohau, is now living at Buckley. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Pope who have been in Hamilton, are in Shannon for a short time. Miss G. Coley (Foxton) and Mr. T. E. Crawford (Wellington) were recently the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Crawford, of Vance street. Tho friends Of Mrs. J. Curran, Sheehan street, an old resident of Shannon, will regret to learn that she is an inmate of a private hospital in Palmerston North. Mrs. Free, who has been seriously ill In the Palmerston North Hospital with blood poisoning, Is showing improvement since tho amputation of her right hand. Rev. J. Abbott, vicar of Taihape parish, and one-time of Shannon, was in Shannon on a short visit looking up old friends. His friends in this district wll be pleased to learn that he has quite recovered from liis recent severe illness.
