"When stock suffer from ailments we arc inclined to think of the cause of the trouble as being the particular “bug” which is attacking the animal. Thus, if pigs get pneumonia it was said that pneumonia was afflicting them. In actual fact, the pneumonia was but a manifestation of such a trouble What must be sought is the “cause behind the .cause.” Treating the ailment, necessary though that be, is but a minor matter compared with remedying matters so as to avoid the trouble in future. In 90 per cent, of cases diseases do not just happen; they are brought on by conditions. The germ may kill the stock, but what condition allowed the germ to do so? , There is a fundamental difference in outlook when this principle is absorbed. The Agricultural Department is to be congratulated upon the activity it is showing in inculcating this principle. It is of the very highest importance to efficient farming.
