Good Fields Engaged at Wanganui Winter Meeting To-day

Interesting Racing is Assured

Betting Will be Single Pool

The Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter meeting opens to-day and concludes on the King’s Birthday. The principal events to-day are the Grandstand Steeplechase and the Century Hurdles, while the Empire Handicap will be the chief fiat race. The fields, taken right through, are good if a bit lighter than anticipated, but there is material on hand for some great racing. The programme is due to , open at noon and the last race, to start at 4.5 p.m., and the betting will be conducted on the single pool system.

The first race will he the Wanganui Bracelet, over a mile ■ and a-quartor, for gentlemen riders. The acceptors number seven, with Donegal holding prido of place. Three, that are likely to carry the bulk of the money aro DONEGAL, COMETRA, PRINCE RENO. Next is the Winter Oats, over six furlongs, and for this there is a pretty good class of horse accepted. Diatomous has the topweight and as he is a brilliant beginner he must be given a chance on a turning course like Wanganui. Midian is reported to be working well, while Gold Mission has indicated that she is near if not at the top of her form. Limulus is another likely to be close handy when tho acid test is being appliod. Dungarvan may be all the bettor for tho race, and the punters may elect to go most solidly for GOLD MISSION, LIMULUS, DIATOMOUS. The third race on tho programme is the Century Hurdles, and of the eight acceptors Speed will not go to the post. Soloist, Chilo and Manawatu should be in good order for tho race, and Silk Sox and Sporting Song will appeal of the othors. When the machine has closed it may bo found that tho public have pinned their faith to SPORTING SONG, ' SOLOIST, CHILE. The Balgownie Hack will bo fought out over 8i furlongs. Mustang is reported to be an unlikely starter, but as there are 11 acceptors without him, a big field is sure to go to the post. The three that may make most appeal ar© HUNTING QUEEN, LE GtRAND, SUPREME COURT. The Grandstand Steeplecnase will be contested over a course of miles, and the quality of the field suggests that tho winner will not be permitted to “tarry by tho wayside.” Recent performances will draw attention to the chances of Cotsfield, Tangled, and Windsor Lad, and they shonld carry most money with the machine indicating

A “baker’s dozen” have been carded for tho Empire Handicap, but with One Whetu and Prostration at the head of the weights there can be no 1 suggestion that bakers’ carts have been associated with their early training. In fact it is a pretty high-class field and a great race is indicated. One Whetu, Prostration, Hazoor, Gay Boy, West Tor, Jubilee Song, Clarion Call, and Alchemic are all recent winners, so that the public will be afforded a wide choice. The field will give punters plenty to think about, but when the machine has closed it may be found they have gone most solidly for PROSTRATION, ONE WHETU, GAY BOY. The last event on tho day’s programme is the Borough Hack Handicap, over six furlongs. There are 15 acceptors and for that reason the post positions and jump-out will have some bearing on tho result.
