Manawatu Hockey Association

MATTERS RELATIVE TO TO-DAY’S

SHIELD MATCH.

Mr L. Laurenson presided over a meeting of the Manawatu Hockey Association on Thursday. Also present were Messrs E. 0. Pullyn, F. McLachlan, W. H. Wilson, W. Lundy, N. Dixon, W. C. Sutton and the secretary (Mr W. J. Fitzgerald).

The New Zealand Hockey Association wrote approving of Messrs W. H. Wilson and H. McQuarrie (Auckland) as umpires for the Auckland v. Manawatu match to-day, providing they were not selectors.—Received.

With regard to the clause which stated that a selector was not permitted to umpire the match, Mr McLachlan asked how tho ruling was derived. Surely, he said, if an umpire rceived the A grade badge it did not matter whether he was a selector or not. An umpire was there to rule impartially and to state what had been stated' in tho letter was suggesting that a selector would favour his side.

Objection to tho clause was also expressed by several of the members and it was decided to write asking what the ruling stated was derived from.

Mr Wilson brought up the question of whether or not the ground at the Showgrounds would be in a suitable condition for the blew Zealand Shield game to-day. He was concerned over the state of the ground because Auckland had been advised that it would be in good condition and at present it was not. Apart from this there was a likelihood of the ground being cut up by further activity if steps were not taken to prevent this. —It was decided to appoint Mr 11. Byers to confer with the Manawatu A. and P. Association to see if some satisfactory arrangement could be made in the matter.

Advice was received with regard to the players constituting the Auckland team. Thoso making the trip are: — Goalkeeper, Anderson; full-backs, H. Jones, F. Clark; half-backs, W. Ross, S. Robertson, L. 11. Watson; forwards, L. Monteibh, I. Ross, R. Roughton, G. Twigden, H. B. Lowry. Emergencies: R. Bowden (back), F. Chapman (forward).

Advice was also received that arrangements had been made whereby the Massey College players would bo permitted to stay in Palmerston .North to play in the Manawatu team against Auckland and yet bo eligible to engage in the University hockey competition. —Received.

The chairman congratulated the Manawatu team on their win over Wellington on Wednesday. A vote ot thanks was accorded the grounds committee for their excellent work in preparing the playing field.
