350,000 Belgian Strikers

Position Gradually Getting Worse

BARRICADES IN THE STREETS

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.

Received Saturday, 2 a.m. BRUSSELS, June 19,

Despite M. Verviers, Minister of Labour, and the strike leaders counselling 1 a mass meeting to accept the principle of the tentative agreement arrived at on Wednesday, the position has gradually became worse under the efforts of foreign agitators who, officials say, are not necessarily from Moscow. Attempts to bring out the tramwaymen in the ct pital failed but the ranks of the strikers are being steadily increased at Liege.

M. Verviers estimated that 350,000 strikers were out last night, including coal-miners, steel-workers, bakers and building workers. The morning’s estimate was that 200,000 were on strike, but Brussels is not seriously involved. Strikers late last night barricaded the streets in the outer suburbs, but the police charged repeatedly and drove off the mob and demolished the barricades.
