Work on Feilding Aerodrome
QUESTION OF ADDITIONAL LABOUR. In connection with the efforts of tho Feilding Aero Club to have the work on the club's aerodrome property at Taonui expedited, Mr D'. C. Cullinano (president) last month interviewed the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. B. Semple) who yesterday forwarded the following communication to the club: With reference to the representations you made to me at Palmerston North on sth ultimo, in connection with the work on the Feilding aerodrome being being expedited I havo to advise that I have made enquiries into this matter and have seen my colleague, the Hon. the Minister of Employment with a view to more men being made available for the work.
I am advised that at tho present time there are some 58 men employed on tho Feilding aerodrome, and that it is anti cipated a number of freezing works employees will shortly be seeking relief, and these men will be eligible for employment at the aerodrome. Regarding your suggestion that this might be a suitable work on which to establish a camp for men from other centres, my department is of the opinion that expenditure in connection with the establishment of a camp to enable labour over and above that available locally to bo employed is not justified at present. I am assured, however, that all labour that can be obtained within a reasonable distance of the aerodrome will bo made available.
