The Pig Market
Market reports show that both pork and bacon sold firmly at late rates. Stores sold steadily at recent values. Local buyers report that pigs are coming forward very freely. The season started late but has carried on well. Killings are now slightly ahead of last season’s. Schedule Rates. Pork'remains at 51d to 80s and 5d to lOOlbs. Bacon at 5Jd, 120-1601bs. These are now above London prices, so that a drop in the pork rates is possible, but bacon should remain firm owing to the very real shortage of supplies for the Dominion market. Good prices for bacon are to be expected right up to Christmas next. A year ago, these were: Bacon, 5Jd, and pork Lid to 5d lb. Export Killings. This season’s export killings of pigs, up to,March. 15, totals 247,340 porkers and 1-64;461 baconers This compares with 269,924 and 100,157 respectively for some 5J months of last season. There has thus been a drop of 22,000 porkers and an increase of 04,300 baconers. This season’s killings show a nett increase of 42,000 pigs.
