Barnard, who was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, i» the 10tn Speaker of the House of Representatives since the establishment of responsible Government in New Zealand in 1854. His predecessors were (in this order): Sir Charles Clifford, Sir David Mohro, Sir Francis Dillon Bell, Sir William Fitzherbert, Sir Maurice O’Rorlct, Sir William Steward, Sir Arthur Guinness, Sir Frederic Lang and Sir Charles Statham.
