The Bride Price

AN AVARICIOUS FATHER TRAGEDY IN A VILLAGE LONDON, Feb. 8. The bride price, an institution considered backward by progressive Serbians, played an important part in a village tragedy which occurred a few days ago at Mramor, near Prishtina, states tho Belgrade correspondent of the Observer. Ebibba, the beautiful daughter of a rich Moslem, was betrothed to Ta-ir Sadikovitch, with whom sho was in love, and the bride price of six thousand dinars (about £25) had already been paid, when her father was approached by a second suitor, Ramadan Yasharovitch, who also offered the same sum. The avaricious father accepted the new offer, and, to avoid complications, gave his daughter immediately in marriage to Ramadan.

As soon as he heard of this the enraged Ta-ir got together his friends and made for tho house of Ramadan, who, failing to emerge after repeated knocking, was shot dead through the door by Ta-ir. Ebibba was then triumphantly carried off to a distant village.
