From Our Own Correspondent. Athletic Sports Club. Tho committee of tho Aplti Athletic Sports Club met on Saturday evening, Mr Wm. McKenzie junior being in the chair. The secretary, Mr. B. Kearney, presented the balance sheet showing the club finances to be in a very satisfactory condition. A votejif thanks was passed to Aplti Stores for'undertaking the catering at tho sports. Ht was hoped to revise the sports programme but the attendance being so small, the matter was left over in the meantime. There was some discussion regarding the McGregor Memorial fund and although nothing definite whs decided upon, a suggestion was put forward that some effort be made to arrange a function to assist suen a worthy cause. Farewell to Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Morris. A social and dance attended by a large gathering- of residents took place at the Aplti Hall on Monday evening, the occasion being a farewell to Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Morris and family. Messrs Phil Lewis (piano) and Harold Lewis (ukelele) sang a very popular duet. Mr. Jack Hansen gave a pleasing vocal solo accompanied by Dr. Barnicoat. Dance music was supplied by Mr. Hansen (piano) and Mr. R. Prine (saxophone), with extras by Mrs. B. Kearney. Mr. Wm. McKay, chairman of the domain board, eulogised the guests of the evening, especially mentioning Mr. Morris’ services on the domain • board, firstly as secretary for. several years and latterly as an elected member, had at all times given of his best in the interests of the district as well as of the domain board. The speaker concluded by wishing Mr. and Mrs. Morris and family every success in the future. Mr. W. J. Viles, who has known Mr. Morris for over twenty years, made special mention of Mr. Morris’ ability and willingness to provide entertainment when called upon to sing at the various functions which he has helped along during his residence here. Mr. George Watkins, tho manager of the Apiti Dairy Factory, referred to the good qualities of Mr. Morris, whom lie had at ail times found to bo a very punctual and dutiful employee, with a happy personality which the sneaker knew would be most helpful in the new sphere of business which Mr. Morris was undertaking. Mrs. C. M. Stanley, president of the Apiti Women’s Institute asked Mrs. Morris to accept a dainty posy of coral .pink gladioli and sweet peas with the best wishes of the W.I. members for the future happiness of Mrs. Morris, her husband and children. Mr. A. R. McNae endorsed the remarks and the good wishes of all the previous speakers, and while expressing the regret felt at th.e impending departure of Mr. and Mrs. Morris, asked them to accept from the residents of Apiti, a gift as a token of the very high esteem in which they were rogarded in the district. In conclusion, Mr. McNae wished- Mr. and Mrs. Morris and their two sons health, happiness' and prosperity in the future. Musical-honours and hearty cheers were then given. . Mr. Morris expressed ihe very sincere regret felt by his wife and himself at leaving Apiti and also exnressed their thanks for the handsome gifts, an oak chiming clock and a cheque. The cheque was placed on top of the clock and Mr. Morris humorously remarked that lie bad always thought the correct nlace for such was' “under the clock.” Supper Was served and dancing continued until a late hour when all joined in singing “Auld Lang Syne.’’ Personal. Mr. Wm. McKay, Misses Mari and Madge McKay, Messrs W. J. Viles and C. F.7Viles have returned from an enjoyable fishing holiday at Taupo. ' - Mrs. C. Munro, of Feilding, is the guest of her sister, Mrs. Wm. McKay. Miss Strahan is spending a holiday with relatives at Tiritea Valley. Miss Josephine Power-Collins. of Wellington, is staying at Marton Block with her aunt, Mrs. T. H. Purnell. •Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Morris, who have been' holidaying in Hawke’s Bay, have now i left Aplti to take up residence in Marton where Mr. Morris has purchased a business. ' '
