CLOSE FINISH IN CHALLENGE. ATKINS OUT FOR THREE MONTHS. R. REED FATALLY INJURED. (Special to “Times.”) WELLINGTON, Last Night. Though fine tho weather was chilly for the third and last day of tho Wellington autumn races at Trentham. Fields were good and racing keen. Tho course ■ was in excellent condition again. The inquiry into the fatal fall of Gay Chief on the oponing day was concluded and tho following finding .was announced:— '■> "That the committee find that the accident was caused through careless riding on the part of P. Atkins, the rider of Mandamus, in coming in too quickly and jamming Pelmet on, to "Gay Chief on the rails, causing-him to fall; and that Atkins be suspended for three months to take effect after the finish of tho Plunket Nursery Handicap.” When Hunting Cat fell in the President’s Handicap bis rider, R. Reed, was seriously injured. He was removed to hospital with severe head injuries, and he died soon aftor 6 o’clock. Chile Stays On. Chile outstayed tho opposition in the Ngaio Highweight Handicap and won nicely from Earl Colossus, who also ran on well. After being near the tail of the field at the mile Summerhill gradually improved his position in the run along the back till ho waß in front at the five furlongs. He led to the straight with Bachhus Marsh from Earl Colossus. Earl Colossus soon had the leaders beaten, but Chile finished strongly to win by two lengths from Earl Colossus with Summerhill four lengths away third, then Bachhus Marsh, The Image and Court Arma. The Two-year-olds. Liane, Double Gift, Birthday Party and Deficit wore prominent when tho Plunket Nursery Handicap field came on to the course proper. Ridden right out the favourite, Birthday Party won by half a length from Double Gift, with Deficit a length away third, and Top Notch fourth just ahead of Cricket, with Mandamus, Pelmet and Moquette next. The winner is speedy and will improve. Double Gift and Mandamus ran good races. Favourite’s Failure. Custos was the best backed of the four starters in the North Island Challeng Stakes, but he failed in a great finish with Wild Chase. Silver Streak got the best of the start, but Custos soon Tan to tho front and led to the straight where Wild Chase ranged alongside him and gained a slight advantage and retained it to the end, winning by half a head. Silver Streak was two lengths away third, and the only other starter was Jubilee Song. Custos was hampered through her rider being unable to use his whip. The Chief Handicap. Argentic was a solid favourite for tho President’s Handicap, and thero was good backing for Big Dook, Spiral was in charge passing tho mile from Hunting Cat and Tunneller. Hunting Cat fell about six furlongs from home, and coming to the straight Tunneller, Sir Nigel, Spiral, Sunee and Big Dook were the leaders. Spiral ran on really well to win by three-quarters of a length from Argentic, who finished splendidly but just too late to get the decision. Korero was a close third and Big Dook fourth, then Sunee and Might. Argentie would have won over a slightly longer journey. Spiral and Sunee impressed and Korero improved immensely since. yesterday. Hack Cup. Maine staged a fine finishing effort to win the Champion Hack Cup. Nightlass ldd to the straight from Dungarvan, Pukeko and Revival, with Onewhetu and Riptide becoming prominent. Dungarvan worked to the front and was challenged by Riptide, whom he shook off, but Maine came on the outer and won by a head and * Riptide was ’two and a-half lengths away third, Onewhetu fourth, then Taumau, Ingenuity and Revival. Small Field. After Money beat a weak field in tho Hutt Handicap. She and Prostration led into the straight and ridden out, After Money won by a length from Prostration, who beat Lady Graceful by the same distance. Passion Flower was fourth, and the only other runner was Hunting Lodge. ; - . , • Favourite Scores, Rereatu, favourite for the Silverstream Handicap, won nicely in a good finish. Acceptable led on to the course proper from Fulojoy, who Tan off tho Lordly Knight and Rereatu were handy and Rereatu finished best

1 to win by n length from Lordly Knight, who beat Haut Monde by a length and a-half with Acceptable, Queen of Song and Invoice following. The Last. Favourites were beaten in the HnereEa Handicap, the last race of the meeting. At the half-mile Hunting Mars led from Eival Shot, Mesurina, Ponty and Grateful. Hunting Mars ran very wide in the straight, but finished well to win from Ponty. Solaria was a good third, Eival Shot fourth, then Shy and Grateful.
