Halcombe

From Our Own Correspondent. Tennis Affairs. The committee of the tennis club met at the residence of the secretary', Mr AV. Davies, on Thursday evening, the following being present: Messrs E. W. Cowdrey (president), W. Davies, E. R. Long, M. C. Amadio,. D. C. Alanagli, R. J. Managli, Misses R. ■ Williams; V. Wilson and Mrs W. Davies. The matter of an account from tho Halcombe Football Club for electricity supplied to run a concrete mixer during the laying' down of the new court, was discussed. After several members had expressed the opinion that they were being over-charged, it was agreed to pay the account in full. The president reported that he had disced, harrowed and sown the patch of spoil deposited on tho recreation ground during the excavation of tho court. Ways and means of raising much needed lunds were then considered and it'was filially decided that a euchre and dance be held in the Jubilee hall on Friday, April 3. It was agreed that the -dance be advertised in the “Times." The secretary reported that the handicap tourneys.were nearing completion, the men’s singles being finished while the. ladies’ singles had .entered the final stages. The meeting decided that the Guy Cup competition trophies for A and B grades, both of which were won by Halcombe, should be presented at the dance and that all neighbouring clubs should be sent a cordial invitation to bo present. The other trophies won in the club’s own competitions will be presented. The club is to play .the Sanson Club on the Halcombe courts as soon as the match can be arranged. In order to maintain interest in the club a doubles tourney', both men’s and ladies’, is to be conducted on tho 22nd of this month, entry fees to be sixpence per head. Messrs E. R. Long, It. J. Managi and M. C Amadio were appointed handicappers. The meeting closed with a hearty vote of thanks to the secretary for the use of the room and for the supper supplied. Personal. Mr V. Hansen, of Colyton and formerly of Halcombe, has been spending a few days with his grandmother,.Mrs Petersen. Mrs E.. H... Lange of Wanganui, who has been the' guest of Mrs M. C. Amadio, has now returned to her home. Messrs F. O'.ven and S. Clark, of Wellington, have been holidaying with if: and Mrs Garnet Nicol. Miss C. M. Rowland, of the Tokorangi School, spent tho week-end in tho capital city. General. Quite a contingent of children from the Halcombo and Tokorangi Schools journeyed to Feilding on Saturday to compete in the Primary Schools' Sports. Although not successful in bringing homo any trophies, tho children had a great' day’s outing, tlio local school filling third place in tho competition for schools with an attendance of under one hundred. Despite the havoc wrought by tho recent hurricane, there are still numbers o? trees in this district that are a di,stinc! menace to power and telegraph lines. It is a great pity that these trees, many oi which are both useful and ornamental, sholud ever have been planted where thev now stand. With tho onset of the colder weather the thoughts of the younger people art : now turning to winter sports and the local hockey and football clubs will soon be marshalling their forces for the coming season.- • . • • Despite the most unfavourable weather that has prevailed this summer, practi- 1 cally all of the wheat crops' have now been threshed and the smoke from many burning straw heaps must be a pleasant sight to those farmers whose work has been so long delayed and interrupted. A good deal of the grain will have suffered and will no doubt be classed as fowl wheat. Fortunately, however, the price for fowl wheat compares very favourably ! with, that of-milling wheat, so-that, apart • from inconvenience and loss of time, there should no-.- be any substantial loss to tlie farming community. Many farmers are complaining that their potato crops' are blighted, while some crops,*' on the Onepuhi fiat, have rotted in the ground. Tomatoes, this season have also been a .disappointment, tho rain having rendered spraying ineffectual. ,
