Swimming

WEST END CLOSES SEASON. On Friday evening last the West End Amateur Swimming Club brought to a close its swimming season, when tho trophies competed for during the year were presented. There was a full attendance of members. Mr. W. Schwabe, president of the club, in thanking members for the enthusiasm displayed during the year, stated that its membership had been doubled in the past two years and tho standard of swimming had improved wonderfully. Credit was due to Mr, A. M. Stevenson, thoir energetic secretary, who had devoted much of his time to the younger swimmers. This was reflected in the improved standard of swimming attained by thorn. Although the club had not been successful in annexing any of tho Manawatu Centre championships, three of its had gained second places. Miss Betty Schwabo had secured a second to Miss P. Sporle in the ladies’ 0 yards freestyle championship; Miss P. Langford second in tho intermediate girls’ 50 yards championship; and I. Dustin swam into second place in tho 220 yards open broaststroko championship. Other members had gained a fair amount of success in inter-club carnivals and wove to bo congratulated upon the improvement shown on last season. The West End School boys’ team, who were all members of the club, had gained most points in the Manawatu combined schools’ competitions held in Palmerston North recently, and hold the Herbert Smith Trust Cup for the season. Junior club members also socured the major placings at tho Palmerston North Technical School swimming sports this season.

The club trophies won during the year were presented to the respective winners by Mrs. W. Schwabe, They are as follows:—Ladies’ club championship (Club Cup), Miss Betty Schwabe, with Miss P. Lampard runner-up. Junior club championship (Penketh Cup), F. Lindsay; Senior club championship (Dawick Cup), A, M, Stevenson. Junior aggregate (club trophy), F. Lindsay. Senior aggregate (club trophy), E. Carlson. Ladies’ aggregate (Miss Schwabe’s trophy), Miss Betty Schwabe.
