BADGER CUP GAME. MAKUEI RETAIN TROPHY. A high standard of tennis marked Sunday’s play at Makuri courts when the challengers, tko Mangamutu A team, were defeated for the first time in four years by an inter-club team. The issue was in doubt practically until the finish of play, but Makuri established a lead four sets to retain the trophy. The final scores were: Makuri, 14 sets, 13-1 games; Mangamutu, 10 sets, 124 games. Following are details of the scoring, Makuri players being mentioned first: — Men’s singles: E. Gregorio beat D. O’Brien, 7—G; C. B. Tylee beat E. Lett, 7—4; A. Foulton beat L. Hamilton, 7—3; R. Absolom beat G. Davies, 7—5; J. P. Tylee lost to L. Heayns, G—7; J. Wood lost to V. Brown, 2—7. Ladies’ singles: Miss V. Rutherford beat Mrs. A. Morgan, 7—o; Miss J. Rutherford beat Miss L. Dick, 7—3; Mrs. C. B. Tylee lost to Mrs. W. Bentley, 6—7: Mrs. H. Eglinton beat Miss K. At the conclusion of play, Mr. Trevor Rutherford, on behalf of the holders, thanked the visiting team for the fine games they had given Makuri, and hoped that on some future occasion they would again have the pleasure of meeting the Mangamutu players.. . Mr. Erel Lett, captain of the visiting team, suitably responded and especially thanked the Makuri lady supporters.for their hospitality and he also extended a cordial invitation to Makuri to visit Mangamutu for a friendly match in the near future.
