Chinese Steamers Cross Klee Fields During Big Floods

HANKOW.—During recent iloou conditions on the Yangtse . River, steamboats have been iinding "short cuts", by heading straight across the fields and thereby greatly reducing the usual distances from point to point. This is particularly easy in regions where the river meanders most, as these are flat districts easily flooded. Once upon a time, according to an old Yangtse story, a captain engaged in this manoeuvre was caught by receding waters .and found his ship, high and dry in the middle of a rice held, to the subsequent indignation of tiiu farmer who owned the -field.
