British Pet Animals Receive £IO,OOO Through Gilts
LONDON.—Fifty pounds’ w'orth of farthings, £6oo’s worth of fiostago stamps and 40,690 letters of sympatky, also three gold rings and one diamond one, are announced, as among results of an appeal made in November through tne British Broadcasting Corporation for help for an institution lor the benefit of animal pets belonging to workers. in all more than £IO,OOO nas been collected, thus affording striking evidence of ’ the existing in Britain of a very largo number of reasons—especially women living by themselves —for whom a pet dog or a cat is often a solace in loneliness and a comforter in need.
Fido and Tabby have much good service to their credit, and the lavish animal affection they bestow upon their protectors is shown by this collection to evoke warm human sympathy in return,.
Snowproof Power Lines Adopted For Tasmania
HOBART.—The construction of snowproof power lines has been undertaken for the first time in Tasmania by
the State Government. Many miles of transmission lines snow country and interruptions have been caused in the power supply after heavy falls. Whet it falls the rebound in the power line, relieved of its weight, has sometimes taken it sufficiently high to touch a ‘line above it, causing a short circuit In tho new design the trouble is obviated by placing all three power lines on a horizontal plane.
