The February meeting of the Women’s Institute, held on Thursday afternoon and presided over by Mrs W. G. Elslng, was truly a delightful function. After business of the meeting had been dealt with, the president welcomed live new members and also a visitor, Miss Jones, from the Waimatu Valley.. Institute, Gisborne. Mrs Elsing further extended a welcome to Mrs and Miss Mahunga who were to provide demonstration and entertainment for the afternoon. Mrs Mahunga then proceeded in a very capable manner to demonstrate the method employed by the Maoris to prepare and weave flax for the making of baskets, mats, etc., members following instructions with keen interest. After tea was served by the hostesses (Mrs H. L. Eddie and Misses F. Ness and H. Beech), Miss Eva Mahunga delighed the members with Maori songs and pianoforte pieces. Members were asked to dig their potatoes for the annual meeting next month. The usual votes of thanks were followed by a short community-sing which concluded the meeting. „ . , Miss Jones, of Gisborne, is the guest of Mrs El win. ~ Messrs W. and J. Sargent and Mr S. Holdaway are on a week-end fishing expedition.
