Hymn Test Won by Woolston
CAIRNS (QUEENSLAND) FIFTH. Per Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, Last Night. A memorable scene was presented at tho official opening of the New Zealand brass bands contest in the floodlighted natural amphitheatre of Pukekura Park to-night. Ominous low clouds with flashes of lightning iu tho distauco and a few heavy drops of rain, threatened to spoil the opening ceremony, but tiio rain did not materialise though an oppressive heat remained. There was au attendance of three thousand. A civic welcome was extended by the Mayor, Air. E. R. O. Giiinour, and other speakers were Air. E. Palliser, president of the New Zealand Brass Bands Association, and Air. S. G. Smith, AI.P. Twelve bands of both grades competed on au even footing to-night in the hymn test which was won by Wooiston 96 points, with Greymouth 92 points second, and Port Nicholson and Timaru 91 points equal, third. Cairns (Queensland) was fifth. Tho judjudicator was Air. A. Baile. Tho playing of the bands was very uniform and of a high standard.
