Caught Shoplifting and Then Bolted
MAORI YOUTH APPREHENDED AND SENT TO GAOL
Stated to have been caught redhanded in tho act of shop-lifting in the city, a youthful Maori was subsequently arrested by the police on Saturday evening last. When being taken to the Central police station he ran away from the constable, only to bo apprehended again after a short chase. . This explanation formed part of the story told to Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., m the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when Simon Knox (alias Knocks), aged 24 years, of Awahuri, stood iu the dock to face three charges of theft from city stores on Saturday lastgoods valued at 3s lOd from J. R. McKenzie’s, Ltd.; goods valued at 4» 6d from Goldfinch and Cousins, and au article valued at Od from Woolworth’s, Ltd. About 8.50 p.m. on Saturday a telephone message was received at the watchhouse at the police station to the effect that accused had been caught shop-lifting at McKenzie’s store, said Senior Sergeant Moriarty. Knox nad been held there until Constable Goodwin had arrived. Ho was being taken to tho Central station, and whon at the entrance ho ran away. / He was chased and brought back from the vicinity of the Post Office. When searched accused was found to have goods on him from three stores, and this had pointed to systematic shoplifting. He had admitted tho offences and had decided to plead guilty. At this stage tho senior-sergeant handed to the Bench a list of accused’s previous convictions. Mr Stout inflicted a sentence of one month’s imprisonment on each count, these to be cumulative.
