Tragedy on Farm

FATAL END TO QUARREL Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Last Night. A tragedy occurred in the Waitepeka farming district near Balclutha on Saturday, when William Beatty, farmer, aged 68, died following a blow allegedly struck during a quarrel by a neighbouring farmer, Hugh TJrquhart Neil Gunn, single, aged 28. Beatty, who was partly crippled, was admitted to Balclutha hospital on Saturday night in an unconscious condition apparently suffering from a severe fracture of the skull, and he died without regarding consciousness about 3 a.m. to-day.

The police investigations indicate that about 8 p.m. on Saturday a dispute arose on deceased's farm over the alleged trespass by Gunn on Beatty’s property. It is stated that during the dispute Beatty was struck on the head with a heavy manuka stick and felled. The victim wa3 conveyed to hospital and Gunn later arrested on a charge of committing assault causing bodily harm. On the death of Beatty he was charged with murder.
