Italy Produces Wool Substitute

ONLY MEANT FOR AN EMERGENCY.

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Sunday, 7.30 p.m. LONDON, Feb. 22. The Associated Press special Bradford correspondent says tnc Wool Industries Research Association’s report on Italian milkwool states that the appearance is similar to merino tops, except \ that there is no crimp. The difference is that the new fibre does not possess scales like wool, turns yellow and weakens in alkali, swells lengthwise 71 per cent., compared with 14 in wool, and when wet also lacks elasticity. It shows a greater affinity for acid dyes than wool and moreover, it does not possess characteristics enabling it to compete with natural wool except in abnormal conditions. It may be mixed with cotton rayon to produce a cheap cloth for Italy in the present economic circumstances. It is an interesting technical achievement but does not bring nearer a, molecular structure with all the properties of wool.
