Misprints in the Bible
'There have been “breaks’’ in the printing of the Bible. At one time the Oxford University Bress offered a guinea reward to anyone detecting a typographical error in any Bible printed by it. We expect tiiat many claimants quoted Zachariah xi.—Woe to the idol shepherd that leaveth the flock. ” They -were ignorant of the fact that the word “idol” was used in the passage of Scripture in the sense borne by it three centuries ago. One of the meanings of the word was “counterfeit” or “sham”; and the original mcauing of “idle” was practically identical—empty, vain, void < ? worth and meaning. An idle man may therefore bo said to be worthless; and an idle shepherd a sham shepherd.
