Principal Handicap Won by Ethiop

Open Sprint to Fmlojoy

The Woodville District Jockey Oiufc’s autumn meeting opened yesterday, the weather being fine and warm until after the sixth race, when light rain fell. The attendance was good and the totalisaW handled £5661 during the day, as compared with £3865 on the corresponding day last year, the increase being £1796. The course was m splendid order and the racing particularly interesting, there being a number of very close finishes. - The Woodville Handicap was won by the Marton-owned and twined Ethiop, with Queen’s Pride and Werohia in the minor places. The open sprint was annexed by Pulojoy, trained at Trentham.

Detailed results are as under; — UAIDEN PLATE, of £6O; 6 furlongs. 1 SANSFOY, Mr W. J. Wood’s b g, syrs., by Royal Divorce— Millie Abbey, 8.11 (D. W. Bush) .. .. - 2 Battle Pomp, Mr W. H. Time, 1.15 2-5. (Winner trained by owner, Trentham.) Easy for Sansfoy Sansfoy and Battle Pomp carried most money in the Maiden Plate and Sansfoy scored decisively, with Battlo Pomp in second place. Golden Anne, Sansfoy, Battle Pomp, Maestro, First Haffd "and Trailer was the order out of ’iroin the barrier" and crossing the top»Sansfoy was showing the way, followed jiby. iTonvmy, Atkins, Golden Anne, Battle Pomp, Trailer and First Hand. Tommy Atkins was losing ground at the home turn and Sansfoy led into the straight attended by Golden Anne, Tommy Atkins, Battle Pomp and Trailer. Nothing had a chance of catching Sansfoy, who beat Battle Pomp by four lengths. There was a good “go” for third and Mozeltove got through to beat Golden Anno by a neck, three lengths away from the second horse. Maestro was close up fifth and then came Warehi and Trailer. (Winner trained by owner, Woodville.) Blue Tiger Prevails in Blanket Finish The Highweight Handicap was remarkable for the blanket finish, in which seven of the eight starters were separated by intervals of only ahead. The early order was Earl Colossus, from Monarchy, Royal Papa, Tiger Bill, John Charles, Widden, Gaswyn, and Blue Tiger. There was not much alteration into the back, where most of them were under a good hold. Monarchy joined Earl Colossus at the sis and the order into the straight was Earl Colossus, from Monarchy, Blue Tiger, Tiger Bill, John Charles and Royal Papa. Then in a thrilling finish Blue Tiger, hotly challenged .by Tiger Bill, John Charles and Widden, hung on gamely to win by a head from Tiger Bill, with Widden, John Charles, Monarchy, Earl Colossus and Royal Papa following at head intervals. WOODVILLE HANDICAP, of £120; miles. 1 ETHIOP, Mr A. T. Gatrell’s br g, 4yrs. by .Nigger Minstrel— Cora Ora, 8.6 (B. H. Morris) . 1 4 Queen’s Pride, Mrs C. Haldane’s ch' m, 4yrs, car. 7.6 (G. Morris, Marton Junction.) • Ethiop Beats Queen’s Pride,

Ethiop was a short-priced favourite for the Woodville Handicap, a fourhorse race, and he won well, .but he was putting all he had into it at the finish to beat _ off the challenge by Queen's Pride. The order from the barrier was Queen’s Pride, Ethiop, Werohia and' Pull* -Throttle, and itwas unchanged for well over a mile. Passing the stands the first time they were running at three-length intervals. The gaps had been reduced a bit going into the back but Queen’s Pride drew away a bit at the far turn. Ethiop and Werohia closed up again at the home turn and Queen’s Pride was a length in front of Ethiop as they straightened up. Half-way down the straight Ethiop had headed Queen’s Pride, and when Werohia joined in it was a good finish, Ethiop winning nicely by half a length from Queen’s Pride, with Werohia and Full Throttle following at similar intervals. (Winner trained by IT. W. Davis, Woodville.) Birthday Party Makes it Pour On End . for Favourites Birthday Party was favourite for the Sapling Stakes, and she made it four on end for the favourites. She missed the jump out when the tapes went up, but it was a good start, Silver Biver leading out from The Bigot, Le Touquet and Siegmund. They had not gone far before Birthday Party was in second place, following Silver Biver across the top and into the straight, with The Bigot and Siegmund together next. As soon as _ they were in line for the judge the favourite tackled Silver Biver and after a great tussle Birthday Party won by half a length. The Bigot was third two lengths away and Siegmund was close up fourth. PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP,of £75; 7 furlongs. 7 KOTOU, Mr T. H. Lowry’s b f, 3yrs, by Night Raid—Courtesy, car. 7.12 (N. Kotou Pays a Price Kotou, Mr T. H. Lowry’s Night Raid-Courtesy filly, was at a good price in the President’s Handicap, but she won well though flat out to hold Lord Moutoa, who made a very bold bid for victory. Royal Record, Midacre, and Mesurina were early prominent, but when the field had settled down Lord Moutoa was in charge from R-oyal Record and Midacre, Kotou and Count Willonyx, Vinco, Mesurina and Confiscation. There was not much alteration crossing the top, and the leaders were unchanged into the straight. Lord Moutoa was still in charge at the distance, but Kotou, Vinco and Mesurina then threw out challenges, and in a great finish Kotou beat Lord Moutoa by a head with Vinco half a length further back third. Mesurina was close up fourth and next were Cheerful Day, Midacre, Royal Record and Peter’s Pence. Sir Nigel and Haut Monde were the last to leave the mark, Lavina being first away followed by Fulojoy, Land Tax, Porotiti and Sir Nigel. Fulojoy had charge at the far turn and she led across the top and into the straight, followed by Lavina, Wasteland, Land Tax, Sir Nigel, Porotiti and Arctic King.
