School Sports’ Association

PAHIATUA CHOSEN FOR THIS YEAR’S FIXTURE. Mr R. Mabey presided at the rneotin gof tho Bush .Primary Schools Sports Association, hold at Harnua School on Monday evening last. There was a large and enthusiastic gathering of members and supporters. Tho election of officers resulted as under: —President, Mr E. Mabey; vicepresident, Mr Harrington; hon. secretary, Mr E. G. McKenzie (Ballance); auditor, Mr M. Lawson. A long discussion took place as to the venue of tho next sports fixture and it was eventually agreed to hold the sports at Pahiatua some time in March. Six ground marshals were appointed to keep the tracks clear on sports day, and it was agreed to reduce the distance of the 10 —12-year-old girls' sack from 75 to 50 yards. It was decided to ask Mr Lawson to carry out tho duties of auditor ouce again, and it was also ageed to iustal a loud-speaker on the ground at the sports. The basis of the funds allocation will be the same as that of last year: Grade 1,6 s Sd; grade 2, I3s 4d; grade 3, £l, The Newman school delegate reported that his school would be willing to run tho refreshment stall again and the offer was accepted with thanks. Messrs L. Polglase and. E. G. McKenzie were appointed trustees- to operate the bank account. Mention was made of the service rendered by the Mayor of Eketahuna (Mr W. Simpson) and tho Eketahuna Athletic .Association, and the secretary was instructed to write thanking them for their kind assistance in the past, and also explaining why the change was made in tho venue of tho meeting. Mr J. F. Johnson, who carried out tho secretarial duties last year, was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his services, and warmly congratulated on his appointment to the Kelburn Normal School. The report read as under: “Tho fifth annual sports meeting was held on tho Eketahuna Domain on Friday, 22nd March, tho following schools competing: Alfredton, Hastwells, Hukanui, Konini, Mangatainoka, Nireaha, Ballance, Hamua, KaipaToro, Kakariki, Newman, Mangamutu, Putara, Eongolcokako, Euawhata and Saunders’ Boad. .This number of schools constituted a record for the Association, while tho gate takings wore exceeded on only one other occasion, that of the Eketahuna jubilee year. The meeting has become a very popular fixture, and with still more schools proposing to join up there is every prospect of a very bright future for the Association. Several innovations were introduced at the meeting, the one of particular interest being the parade of the pupils from the, competing schools. This was popular alike with competitors and spectators and with further experience should develop into a worth-whilo feature. “The public address system was xeintroduced and provided entertainment throughout tho day, as well as assistance to those controlling the various events. “Financially, the Association is in a sound position. Allocations were mado to the schools competing at the preceding meeting on tho basis of £l, 13s 4d and 6s Sd to schools of Grades 111, 11, and I respectively. This leaves the Association with a strong credit balance. “The Association’s honorary auditor carried out his duties under somewhat difficult circumstances, being an inmate of the Pahiatua Public Hospital, where he recently underwent an operation for the removal of shrapnel. Tho executive trusts that his stay there will be a short one.”
