HAWKE CUP CRICKET

Poverty Bay’s Challenge GAME IN VERY OPEN POSITION. Whoa play was adjourned yesterday* the Hawke Cup cricket match between Manawatu and Poverty Bay (challengers) was in an interesting position. On Thursday the visitors were dismissed for 9S, and, yesterday Manawatu succeeded in establishing a small lead on the first innings, compiling 112. In their second strike Poverty Bay have nine wickets down for 94. As on Thursday, poor individual batting scores were the rule. Tho wicket was not difficult, but the outfield was heavy, added to which the bowling and fielding were of a high order. Bowling for JVlanawatu, Murchison accomplished the hat trick and finished up the day with five for 23. Gallichan, whose bowling was a feature of the first day's play, took three for 11. When stumps were drawn on Thursday Manawatu had lost five wickets for 65, the not-out batsmen being Norris (12) and Hearsey (3). With the addition of one run to the score, Hearsey was clean bowled by Bobertson. Gallichan joined Norris and the score mounted slowly, singles being the order. At 85 Norris was beaten by Stewart, .the retiring batsman's contribution being 22, in which there was only one boundary stroke. With .three wickets in hand, the defenders now had a good chance of passing the visitors’ first innings score, Only 14 runs being needed for this. M. A, Ongley and Gallichan carried the total to 93 before a separation was effected, the latter being caught at fine leg in attempting a big hit. Poverty Bay’s total was passed with Ongley and Pollitt at the wickets. Pollitt did not last long, while Berquist, who followed him, failed to score. The innings closed at 112, compiled in 18S minutes. M. A. Ongley carried his bat for 16, Poverty Bay’s Second Innings. The challengers entered on their second strike at 12.30 o’clock, Boon and Bow being the opening batsmen. At the luncheon adjournment they were still together, the total then being 18 —Boon 10, Dow 8. Off Berquist, Boon had hit a six, the first of the match. Dow monopolised the scoring when play was resumed, putting Murchison into the grandstand for a beautiful sixer. The first wicket fell with the total at 32, when Boon, who had failed to add to his morning score, was caught in the slips by Cutler off Gallichan. Dive runs later Dow had his stumps spreadeagled by Gallichan. The retiring batsman had contributed 26, all, with the exception of his six, being from singles and twos. Beeves survived only one ball, then being caught behind the wickets. Gallichan’s average at this stage read three for three off seven overs. After scoring six singles, Fraser had his bails scattered by Murchison.—Four for 47. Bennett and Bobertson brought 50 up in 81 minutes. A risky single at 58 nearly cost Bobertson his wicket, the batsman just beating a smart throw-m by Cutler. The scoring Tate slowed up, the batsmen not being able to take any liberties with the accurate bowling of Gallichan, Berquist and Murchison. After 45 minutes, at the crease, during which time he hit seven singles, Bennett had a swipe at the last ball of an over by Murchison, missed and was clean bowled.—Five for 66. Hat Trick to Murchison. Gallichan sent down a maiden to Bobertson and* then Murchison’s first' ball saw Lockett caught at cover-point by Pollitt, the fieldsman falling over in taking a,great catch. Carroll came out,

only to provide Murchison with the hattrick, the fast bowler shattering the newcomer’s stumps. Seven wickets were now down for 66. Murchison had now taken four for 17 off 13 overs. Stewart joined Bobertson and played out tho remainder of the over without scoring. The tea adjournment was then taken with light rain falling. Owing to a heavy shower, play was not resumed till 5 o’clock. Bobertson scored a single off Hearsey and then Stev.---.rt, after a nice boundary stroke, got his leg in front to the same bowler. —718—4. With Wells and Bobertson at the wickets, the total advanced to SO, when further rain at 5.30 caused another stoppage. Play was resumed 20 minutes later. Murchison, bowling with the wind, was developing considerable pace and sent down four successive! maidens, all the runs eomii 0 off Hearsey. Wells looked like making a stand with Bobertson, who had been at the crease for 150 minutes, but in the last over of tne day the former was bowled by Murchison. Stumps were drawn with 94 on the board for the loss of nine wickets. Detailed scores:— MANAWATU. First Innings.
