Flag Planting Too Flimsy
U.S.A, AND ANTARCTIC CLAIMS United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Friday, 5.35 p.m. NEW YORK, Feb. 21. That Congress should immediately officially claim sovereignty over the Antarctic areas explored by Rear-Ad-miral Byrd and Mr. Ellsworth, is argued by Charles Henry Hyde, Professor of International Law at Columbia University, in an article published to-day. lie said the mere act of claiming the possessions for Ihc United States by planting flags, constitutes a flimsy claim that might easily disappear.
“It ought to be clear,’’ he said, “that if the United (States desires to keep or take advantage of what men like Byrd, and more recently Ellsworth, have valiantly sought to win, Congress should lose no time in proclaiming th< fact and in declaring to the world that there is a region in Antarctica which belongs to Uncle Sam.’’ .
