Cattle and Tuberculosis

From time to time, over the past decade, the name of Spahlinger has appeared in the cable news. He was reported to be in Switzerland experimenting with a serum to cure the human race of the scourge of tuberculosis. Later he was reported to have exhausted his own and the fortunes of his family in his researches. He then, for a time, disappeared from the news. Now again, he and his work have attracted wo rid-wide attention but this time as a result of a quite remarkably promising trial of his serum for the minimising of cattle from tuberculosis, carried out in Northern Ireland, by the Ministry of Agriculture.,. A very full account of these trials appears on our farm page of this issue and this will be of interest to all who have the welfare of the dairy industry at heart as well as to those interested in the health of our race. It may be recalled that the Dairy Commission estimated the cost of eradicating tuberculosis from the dairy herds of New Zealand, at £1,000,000. The Commission recommended the expenditure as one highly desirable, to secure the future welfare of this important industry. It would appear to be a sound policy that our Agricultural Department should obtain some of M. Henri Spahlinger’s serum and institute tests as to its efficacy jJafiLiWauto '
