Oroua Downs
From Our Own Correspondent. Approximately 40 members attended the annual meeting of the Oroua Downs Sports Club held on January 7. Mr. J. Cameron occupied the chair. The chairman asked those present to stand in respect to Mr. J. McKelvie, Mr. L. Moffat, Mrs. L. Hunter and Master Douglas Proctor who passed away since the last meeting. The balance-sheet, showing a debit balance of £54 10s and a reduction in the year’s working of £25, was adopted after a short discussion. It was decided that the value of the property bo written down.
Tho following officers were eleced for the coming year:—President, Mr. J. Cameron; vice-presidents, Messrs E. Christensen, D. Cowdrey, "V". Bird, H. T. Olliver, E. Conlan, F. C. Raikes, J. Funnel!, J. W. Scott, A. Jamieson and A. Thompson; auditor, Mr. C. Massey; secretary, Mr. R. Gates; hall committee, Messrs W. Gordon, M. Mills, K. Cotton, J. A. Conlan, J. Scott and A. Thomson; delegate to A.A.A., Mr. A. T. Nichols. Mr, W. Gordon was granted two .guineas for his services during. the year, while the auditor (one guinea) and the .secretary (ten guineas) also received grants. ■The date of the sports was fixed for February 26, subject to the approval of the A.A.A. The secretary was instructed to write to Dunedin seeking a championship for the dancing, and also to the local Women's Institute thanking them for a donation. It was also decided to ask Mr. P. Reihana to arrange, if possible, Maori dancing as an interlude to the other dancing. It has been found necessary to hold weekly meetings, the next being on the 14th. On New Year’s Eve the local Tennis Club staged a successful dance from which it profited by a considerable amount
Haymaking still continues, while those paddocks which are yet to be harvested are almost flat.
