Peer Discharged

HOPELESS TO PROCEED WITH CASE. United Press Association—By Electric T elegraph. —Copyrigli t. LONDON, Jan. 10.

Lord do Clifford was discharged at tho Old Bailey ou a charge of dangerous driving on the occasion of a fatal accident, the prosecution offering no evidence.

Mr. Justice Charles said: I was present at the House of Lords. I think it would be hopeless after the acquittal there to proceed with a charge of misdemeanour.

Counsel referred to the great number of anonymous and abusivo letters received by Lord do Clifford accusing him of putting tho country to the unnecessary expenso of a trial by his peers. The slightest inquiry would liavo shown that a peer has no power to elect where he will be tried and cannot waive the right of trial by his peers.

Mr. Justice Charles, confirming that Lord de Clifford had no alternative, said that anonymous letters were contemptible things and were written in this case by people who were not only contemptible but also abysmally ignorant.
