By-elections in Britain
ROSS-CROMARTY POSITION STILL COMPLICATED Received Sunday, 7 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 11. The nominations for tho Scottish Universities by election are:—Mr Ramsay MacDonald (Nationalist), Professor Dcwar-Gibb (Scottish Nationalist), and Air D. Clcghorn (Labour). After hearing Air Randolph Churchill’s trenchantly bitter attack on Messrs Malcolm and Ramsay AJucDonald, the Conservative Association of ltoss-Cromarty, by 135 votes to ill, decided to run a Conservative candidate. Then by 160 votes to 17 they adopted Air Churchill, who introduced a further complication with the suggestion, which was unanimously adopted, that he stand down if the Liberals adopt an acceptable candidate, instead of Air Alalcolm AlacLonald. It is almost certain that the independent Gaelic-speaking Liberal Provost, Al,r Roderick Smith, will be nominated.
The AJanchcstcr Guardian’s diplomatic correspondent says Conservative headquarters arc confident that Air Churchill will poll a derisory vote, but fear that a strong local Liberal candidate might run Air Alalcolm AlacDonald very close.
Mr Malcolm MacDonald Adopted Received Sunday, 6 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 11. It is understood the Liberals arc rejecting Air Churchill’s proposal, as they officially adopted Mr Malcolm AlacDouald last week. Colonel Blair, secretary to the Scottish Unionist Whip, says the Conservative leaders will certainly support All Malcolm AlacDouald. The Scottish Nationalists have decided not to fight tho election.
